Contact Indrajit Roy (indrajitr@hp.com) the author of the Airavat Paper and the project is not active. So the only concerned conflict is no longer active. For reference, here is the conversation:

Hello Suresh,
The Airavat project is not actively been developed. The code and project status is what is described/available at thehttp://z.cs.utexas.edu/users/osa/airavat/

Good luck with your apache project.

Thanks,
Indrajit

Subject: Status of Airavat

Hi Indrajit,

Is your UT project Airavat [1] in active development? I could not find any references beyond your Usenix paper. I am contacting on behalf of the Apache Airavata project [2]. The project is ready to graduate into a top level apache project and as part of our trademark verification we did a search for "Airavata" [3]. Even though your project "Airavat" does not have 'a' in the end, but just trying to be cautious. Can you please briefly mention the status of your project or any other potential trademark/branding issues you have with "Airavat"?

Thanks,
Suresh

> The Airavata podling was proposed to incubator to inherit and further develop software to register, compose, manage, execute, and monitor small to large scale command line applications and workflows on computational resources ranging from local clusters to national grids and computing clouds.
> Airavata was initially chosen by voting among initial committers. The proposer intended that Airavata is a multi-tasked elephant and is positioned at the gateway to heaven, hence it made sense to name it for software which will build gateways to clouds and grids.
