Podling Report Reminder - March 2019

Dear podling,

This email was sent by an automated system on behalf of the Apache
Incubator PMC. It is an initial reminder to give you plenty of time to
prepare your quarterly board report.

The board meeting is scheduled for Wed, 20 March 2019, 10:30 am PDT.
The report for your podling will form a part of the Incubator PMC
report. The Incubator PMC requires your report to be submitted 2 weeks
before the board meeting, to allow sufficient time for review and
submission (Wed, March 06).

Please submit your report with sufficient time to allow the Incubator
PMC, and subsequently board members to review and digest. Again, the
very latest you should submit your report is 2 weeks prior to the board
meeting.

Candidate names should not be made public before people are actually
elected, so please do not include the names of potential committers or
PPMC members in your report.

Thanks,

The Apache Incubator PMC

Submitting your Report

----------------------

Your report should contain the following:

*   Your project name
* A brief description of your project, which assumes no knowledge of
the project or necessarily of its field
* A list of the three most important issues to address in the move
    towards graduation.
* Any issues that the Incubator PMC or ASF Board might wish/need to be
    aware of
* How has the community developed since the last report
* How has the project developed since the last report.
* How does the podling rate their own maturity.

This should be appended to the Incubator Wiki page at:

https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/March2019

Note: This is manually populated. You may need to wait a little before
this page is created from a template.

Mentors
-------

Mentors should review reports for their project(s) and sign them off on
the Incubator wiki page. Signing off reports shows that you are
following the project - projects that are not signed may raise alarms
for the Incubator PMC.

Hi,
I totally agree with what's been said by Chris and Justin.
This is one of the mature learnings towards becoming a tlp from my perspective. Especially when the community grows and more developer or groups join the project.

So with regards to calcite integration i can of course only integrate with you or give my advises and feedback through discussions on list.

Best

I’m not sure that removing it answers Chris’s question, either this is planned and has been discussed off list or not. Please try and have all discussion on the list that way you attract more people and they will know what is going on and your mentors also know what is going on and can track your progress towards graduation.

Thanks,

I'm totally fine with that version :-)

And a big fat +1 for posting summaries for PRs.

Hi Chrirs,

Thanks.

I will remove the sentence ` We'd like to try to release the first binary
version under the guide of mentors in the next month`.

It is my fault to add it on the report (because I think it says "Please
feel free to add your own commentary", so I added my commentary...).
Indeed, there is no a consensus about that even among us (who can talk face
to face).

As for the reviewing list, maybe at least for each PR, we can post a mail
on dev@ mailing list to let everyone who are interested know about that.

The following is the updated draft:

IoTDB

IoTDB is a data store for managing large amounts of time series data such as
timestamped data from IoT sensors in industrial applications.

IoTDB has been incubating since 2018-11-18.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. Release the first version;
  2. refactor codes which are hard to understand for new developers, and
supply more design documents
     to help new developers.
  3. Attract more contributors;

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

 - no.

How has the community developed since the last report?

 - 4 new contributors joined the community: review and modify the English
documents, add Apache Calcite adaptor demo, and discuss in the mailing list.
 - Mailing list:
-- dev@mailing list: 59 emails are sent, and can be divided into 18
threads (Apache Jenkins Pipeline notifications are exclude)
-- reviews@mailing list: more than 420 mails are sent, for code review
and new branch creation notifications.

How has the project developed since the last report?

  - 48 PR are proposed totally, and 42 PR are merged.
 - 16 authors have pushed 50 commits to master and 110 commits to all
branches.
 - 31 issues (bugs, and feature requests) are logged on JIRA, 15 of them
are resolved.
 - Dockerfile is created, which can attract more users to try IoTDB.

How would you assess the podling's maturity?

- The project is growing.

Please feel free to add your own commentary.

When were the last committers or PPMC members elected?

Have your mentors been helpful and responsive or are things falling

that need to be addressed.

Hi Chrirs,

Thanks.

I will remove the sentence ` We'd like to try to release the first binary
version under the guide of mentors in the next month`.

Yeah, it's quit import for the others to know what's going on of the
project by following the mailing list.
Please try your best to avoid the internal discussion to build a
transparent community.

Re: Podling Report Reminder - March 2019

Posted by Christofer Dutz <ch...@c-ware.de>.
Hi All,

One thing I have noticed recently that almost all discussion has moved either to the review list or is not happening on any list.
That's not good for including new contributors.

At least I no longer have an idea what you guys are working on, so I'll probably just concentrate on reviewing releases.

Also couldn't I see any Email mentioning any planed releases ("- We'd like to try to release the first binary version under the guide of
mentors in the next month.") So I guess this has been discussed off-list. Keep in mind, even if most of you might be closely communicating,
others can't participate in this. So in order to grow a community, you have to make others feel part of the team, by including them in
discussions like this.

In other podlings I'm involved in, sometimes a contributor is sitting next to me, but I still ask him to post his questions on the list
Or I write summaries myself and post them. You should start doing the same.

Hi,

The following is the draft.

IoTDB

IoTDB is a data store for managing large amounts of time series data such as
timestamped data from IoT sensors in industrial applications.

IoTDB has been incubating since 2018-11-18.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. Release the first version;
  2. refactor codes which are hard to understand for new developers, and
supply more design documents
     to help new developers.
  3. Attract more contributors;

- We'd like to try to release the first binary version under the guide of
mentors in the next month.

  [ ] Initial setup
  [ x ] Working towards first release
  [ x ] Community building
  [ ] Nearing graduation
  [ ] Other:

Date of last release:

  - N/A

When were the last committers or PPMC members elected?

  - N/A

Have your mentors been helpful and responsive or are things falling
through the cracks? In the latter case, please list any open issues
that need to be addressed.

  - very Helpful.
