Would it be feasible to provide a .nosrc.rpm file for people to download
at the same time as the tarball, or would that be to much of a PITA
(not knowing how ASF organise files for download)?

Yeah, distros that leave out the tools. <grump> That's why I had to
rip your sa RPM out by its tonsils and install from CPAN.

Real packagers almost never use the .spec file included in source
tarballs, because we always need to make various customizations for our
distributions.

Shouldn't be a problem, i used rpm2cpio on 3.0.4.src.rpm to create the 3.0.5
RHEL4 rpms. As long as packagers (eg: Warren) can take care of this, most
end users wouldn't notice. You might want to let others on the sa-dev know
about this.

Wouldn't help, the tar file has to be named appropriately for the spec file,
and we can't (and wouldn't want to) re-release the same named file. Since
we'd have to update the repo, Changes file, etc, it's enough for a 3.0.6 bump.
The question comes down to: is it worth doing for the small amount of change.

Release a 3.0.5_1 version or something like that.

Yeah, I unfortunately only noticed that after the release occurred. Sorry.
To fix it, we'd have to release 3.0.6, and I don't know if anyone'd be
interested in that simply for the spec file. :(
