apacheds stale pid file

Hi, I am using apacheds-2.0.0-M8-default (deb package install) and it is 
failing to start due to what I think is a stale pid file. Kindly advise.

eric@app-server:~$ sudo service apacheds-2.0.0-M8-default start
Starting ApacheDS - default...
ApacheDS - default is already running.


eric@app-server:~$ sudo service apacheds-2.0.0-M8-default stop
Stopping ApacheDS - default...
/opt/apacheds-2.0.0-M8/bin/apacheds: 418: kill: No such process

Unable to stop ApacheDS - default.
