[users@httpd] Very strange problem with apache, please help me !

Greetings,

I have Linux Redhat 7.1, and Apache 1.3.22, and suddenly the web service 
stops, and I tried to start and says "OK", after I did httpd status, and 
says the following message:
"httpd dead but pid file exits"
I deleted the file at /var/run/httpd.pid and gaves me another message
"httpd dead and subsystem locked"
Finally, I decideI upgrade to the apache 1.3.27 version, and doesn't 
work, it has the same problem.
I  don't know what to do... :-(
I did /usr/sbin/httpd -t and the syntaxis is ok

Odd message. Have you checked error.log?

  How big is your access.log file? Have you tried clearing it out? I run 
RedHat 7.2 with Apache 1.3.27 and have had no problems like that (my 
other problems consisted of other applications snagging the port(s) I 
tried to used).

Greetings,

I have Linux Redhat 7.1, and Apache 1.3.22, and suddenly the web service 
stops, and I tried to start and says "OK", after I did httpd status, and 
says the following message:
"httpd dead but pid file exits"
I deleted the file at /var/run/httpd.pid and gaves me another message
"httpd dead and subsystem locked"
Finally, I decideI upgrade to the apache 1.3.27 version, and doesn't 
work, it has the same problem.
I  don't know what to do... :-(
I did /usr/sbin/httpd -t and the syntaxis is ok

It seems that versions of Apache pre- 1.3.26 have this problem. Why not 
upgrade the server to the latest version (1.3.27 or 2.0.45)?
