FOP for jdk 1.x

Hi, All

I know how stupid it sounds but I really need jdk 1.x sources of fop,
xalan & xerces. Please anybody who has send ne on
natalia.oudaltsov@clients.ie

Many thanks
Natalia

I don't think the request is 'stupid' at all. I've long been in favor of
maintaining the lowest common denominator possible. I would prefer 'new
features' be designed to run on older systems if possible. In addition,
I would prefer those features which for whatever reason cannot run under
1.2 or 1.3, be added as 'modules' or something, so that the core FOP
functionality could still be run under 'lesser' JDK. Granted it may be
naive on my part to think this way. I understand that such a system may
also increase development time, which is probably the last thing the FOP
re-design needs.

We've recently had an issue with a customers who generates on the order
of 300,000 PDFs/month (that customer has additional internal 'customers'
who generate additional large-scale '-print' output). They run much of
their infrastructure on AIX 4.3 under IBM jdk 1.3. As 1.3 is the latest
version of Java that can run on AIX 4.3, that box probably won't be
upgraded. The problem related to AWT issues running 'headless', which
IIRC were resolved by loading a different video driver to fake a X
window server or some such.

In any case, if FOP determines it's in its best interest to move toward
minimum JDK of 1.4 (or 1.5), such changes won't benefit that client at
all. What does this mean? It means my company becomes a little less like
to want to support my involvement in FOP. NOTE: we do have other clients
who use FOP, however, the AIX client is arguably our largest client.

As you might surmise from my comments above, I agree with you on that
point, Chris.

Thanks, Chris

I found fop 0.18 so now I need xalan&xerces to be absolutely happy.

Interesting .... There are still some old FOP source distributions on the FTP
site. See:

http://apache.mirror.positive-internet.com/xml/fop/source/old/

I think you will need to go back to 0.18 to get it compiling on JDK 1.1

Please tell me, why do you need JDK 1.1? I am interested because a lot of the
FOP developers seem to be very keen on using the latest JDKs available. I have
been trying to persuade folks for some time of the need to keep compatibility
with at least 1.3 for the medium term. The reason being that there a lot of
old mainframes and unix servers out there, which cant run newer JDKs. The
reasons behind this vary, but I think we should keep FOP's source compatible
with 1.3 for the foreseeable future.
