I have created a PR for this task, which can be found here [https://github.com/apache/solr/pull/1196] 

I have taken lots of inspiration from [~joshgogz] from the REPLACENODE v2 implementation, so thank you for that! Your solution and questions along the way was a big help for me in understanding what this commit should be about!
