Here is an overview of the issue:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
        Key: MAVEN-1378
    Summary: Upgrade XStream to latest
       Type: Wish

     Status: Unassigned
   Priority: Critical

 Original Estimate: Unknown
 Time Spent: Unknown
  Remaining: Unknown

    Project: maven
 Components:
             core

   Assignee:
   Reporter: Brian Topping

    Created: Sun, 18 Jul 2004 9:11 AM
    Updated: Sun, 18 Jul 2004 9:11 AM

Description:
Dentaku uses XStream in with generators built for XDoclet2. Since XDoclet2 runs on the maven classpath, we have to use the XStream that Maven wants to use. This is a problem because the generators create serialized XML that requires the same version of XStream to be used at the time of deserialization. Transitively, our use of Manen for the build is requiring that we use an outdated version of XStream in Dentaku. That's no fun!

It would be super excellent if Maven used a recent version of XStream. Joe has made a lot of changes since the version that Maven uses, and I after trying to convert things myself, I can see why it hasn't been done yet. I wish that I was able to contribute the fix as a patch instead of just logging a groan about it.

Anything is appreciated, and thanks and congrats on the 1.0 release!
