Apache-Tomcat setup issues

If I have Apache running and I include the Tomcat.conf file in httpd.conf
then Apache throws an exception if I try and browse to any jsp page in the
root.

So if I try and go to http://localserver:4242/some.jsp Apache throws an
exception, while if I go to http://localserver/4242/somedir/some.jsp I get
an "Internal Server Error" page if tomcat isn't running; a 404 error if
Tomcat is running but can't find the page; and I get the page displayed if
the address is OK.

This is on Win32, Tomcat 3.0 (built from the sources using JDK 1.3) running
on the 1.3 VM with the 1.3.9 release of Apache,

Also...
If I try and create a <context> under Tomcat and use it from Apache then it
works OK.

However if I follow the second part of the instructions in the "How-to" note
then I can't get Apache/Tomcat to see the context (I keep getting 404
errors) unless I set the root of Apache to reference Tomcat, like this

ApJServMount / /root

That also solves the problem of Apache blowing up when I reference a jsp
page - is this how it should work or am I doing something stupid?
