No change in this method, it would break all plan that use it.
Again, your issue is due to the fact that you get String instead of numeric.
Check what is the variable you don't get, use Debug Sampler to show its value
before the Beanshell Element and if missing, check where this variable is
created.
I don't thing it's a jmeter bug.
Unless you can provide the requested elements we asked for, I am afraid we'll
have to close this issue as WORKSFORME.
Regards

You cannot "apply" bug fix.
But you can use nightly build (the link you indicated is ok) you'll get the
last successful build.

What do you mean by "Applying" ?
Are you using nightly build as is ? or are you copying jars from nightly to
your current installation ?
Can you provide jmeter.log ?
Thank you

There can be a lot of reasons for such error including an issue triggered by
Java upgrade, a change in JMeter, a 3rd party plugin issue in upgrade....
We document incompatible changes in release notes (Paragraph Incompatible
changes), read:
- http://jmeter.apache.org/changes_history.html (see every Incompatible changes
or every version)
http://jmeter.apache.org/changes.html#Incompatible%20changes
You're upgrading through 5 versions (3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.0 , 5.0).
If you provide your beanshell code here, we can possibly point to the issue.

[Bug 63065] Getting Typed variable declaration error after upgrading
to jmeter 5.0
Posted by bu...@apache.org.
https://bz.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=63065
--- Comment #6 from garun11@gmail.com ---
Getting below exception java.lang.ClassCastException: Cannot cast
java.lang.String to int
Point to be noted that the same script is working fine with jmeter 3.0, new
java home is updated as required.Do I need to do changes in code,jmeter 5
doesnt have backward compatibilty for the code?

Thanks for report.
We hope to release it soon.
I opened:
- https://github.com/beanshell/beanshell/issues/533
But I don't have a lot of hopes it will be fixed.
@Felix, @all, I propose the following plan:
- Update JMeter 4.0 release notes with this issue
- Add in component reference for Beanshell a note on the workaround to avoid
facing this issue
- Add this workaround also in release notes as a known problem

--- Comment #4 from Felix Schumacher <fe...@internetallee.de> ---
If you really can't show us the code of your bsh. You could try to wrap your
bsh code in a try/catch block like:
try {
// your code
} catch (Throwable e) {
log.error("BSH threw an exception", e);
}
and see, if there is more information in the log file.
Alternatively you could remove some code from your bsh and see, if the error
(and functionality of course) goes away.
Did you change other things in your environment like switching from java 6 to
java 8?

Another note, the maintainer of Beanshell answered with a very interesting
note.
A new version of Beanshell may be released in the future but without any
visibility and project is lacking of (wo)manpower.

Good catch Felix !
The new version of bsh contains a security fix, so it cannot be rollbacked.
Do you think it's worth reporting ?
Beanshell is not actively maintained anymore.
@garun11, your best option is to move to JSR223+ Groovy which is the advised
way to since many versions.

Hello,
Add a Debug Sampler before your Beanshell Sampler and show here the values you
get in View Results Tree.
It looks like checkDist is not numerical.

This would be a nightly build not JMeter 5.0.
JMeter 5.0 can be found here:
http://jmeter.apache.org/download_jmeter.cgi
Still, it should not change behaviour, if it does please report.
Where you able to provide information related to DebugSampler addition ?
Thanks

You're doing something wrong as in the log you have this:
JMeter: Version 5.0 r1840935
While you should have:
JMeter: Version r1850790
So you are testing 5.0 not nightly build.
Ensure you open a console , cd to folder then:
.\jmeter.bat

Simple test plan to reproduce bug
It seems this is a regression in bsh-2.0b6.
The problem is the non-declaration of untyped variables inside block scope:
if (true) {
var1 = "some value";
}
vars.put("var", var1);
will reproduce the behaviour. If you replace the bsh-2.0b6.jar file in
$JMETER_HOME/lib with bsh-2.0b5.jar, the test plan will work (even with JMeter
version 5.1-nightly).
Even if this is a regression, I am not sure that JMeter can do anything about
it.
