Have a look at

http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs.cgi/xml-security/src_samples/org/apache/xml/security/samples/signature/CreateSignature.java?rev=1.9&view=markup

which is a sample that comes with the library.  It includes a reference
to an external document.
