[jira] Created: (OFBIZ-2288) Update the image / content scroller on index.html

Update the image / content scroller on index.html
-------------------------------------------------

                 Key: OFBIZ-2288
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-2288
             Project: OFBiz
          Issue Type: Improvement
          Components: site
    Affects Versions: SVN trunk
            Reporter: Tim Ruppert
            Assignee: Tim Ruppert
             Fix For: SVN trunk

Currently there is a JavaScript scroller on the index.html page, but it's not clear to everyone that it is there. Let's do this:

1. Make it so that they scroll ever 10 seconds between what is there.
2. Put a pause on it - which will stop the scrolling, but allow you to start it up again.
3. Make it so what comes up first is totally random
4. Make it so it scrolls around to the beginning again instead of stopping at the last one (in either direction)

David, how do you "create an archive" for the images? I'm not even sure how to do this unless it's just a name for a zip file? Anyways, as I said in the last comment - going to get this all resolved today.

Jacques, these issues are unrelated at the SVN repo level. The other repo is one where we manage ofbizext access for those in the community, so that explains the confusion. My guess, David, is that many of these files have been updated by others reformatting code, so when Foster laid back down his code, formatted as it was in the original version, then it looks like he's making massive changes when this was indeed the work of others.

That being said, I'll get with the Fost and get this cleaned up so that it can make it in ASAP. Thanks for taking a peek and providing him good usage advice. Looking forward to getting this resolved ASAP.

-------------------------------

    Attachment: images.zip
                index.patch

Here is the patch for the homepage of ofbiz.apache.org. Patch should contain new javascript that loads slide content randomly on initial load, then begins to cycle through the content in a continuous loop with no stopping. Transitions are 1 sec in length, with a 10 sec pause between transitions. Clicking the pause button causes slideshow to stop. On cick, the pause button fades and is replaced by a start button (which of course restarts the slideshow on click).

Patch also contains footer layout fix, and stylesheet cleanup and consolidation.

David E. Jones commented on OFBIZ-2288:
---------------------------------------

With source repositories you either use them right, or they are useless... and a real pain on top of useless. The first rule is to always work in your sandbox... always. That means work on the files right in the directory you checked out. It's easy to kill other people's changes if you copy a file into a checkout directory that is based on a different checkout revision than the one you copy it into.

Keep in mind that SVN (or whatever) keeps track of the differences between your file and the version you checked out. That way when you update it knows which lines you changed and can merge them with lines others changed. If you lose the link between the file you're editing and the source repo revision it is based on, problems happen.

A couple of common scenarios that will cause problems:

1. checkout in directory A, edit a file; checkout in directory B with a different revision (usually a later checkout); copy file from A to B and when you do a diff in B it will undo all changes in the repository between the revisions for A and B

2. checkout in directory A; copy a file into directory X and edit it there; update the sandbox/checkout in directory A; copy the file back from directory X to directory A; SVN will think the file is based on the latest revision, just it is based on the earlier revision... and that will cause it to undo all the changes

In general: please read through the patch file your produce and check each line! Remember that when you submit a patch you are asking the committer who volunteers to review every line of the patch (that's what they _should_ be doing anyway).

=====================

Back to the main point of the new patch (indexUpdate.patch): the file is 1749 lines long, with lots of changes that don't seem to have anything to do with the changes described, and that means it takes a LONG time to review it and significantly increases the chance of problems with the patch.

There are a couple of files added by it that I'm not sure about the purpose of, namely full.html, subpage.html, and style.html.

There are lots of lines changed that appear to have no change other than formatting, but it's hard to tell by reviewing them manually. Please avoid formatting changes, this helps to make patches a LOT smaller and makes things way easier to review.

There are still changes in the index.html file that appear to move things around to different parts of the file that were changed in recent revisions, which is specifically what leads me to believe that this file got mixed up with the wrong revision.

Ryan Foster commented on OFBIZ-2288:
------------------------------------

It's just a name for a zip file. On Mac in finder, if you select multiple files, right click and choose "Compress these files", it automatically names the compressed file Archive.zip.

What Tim is saying seems to make sense. I know that I was working directly on an up to date copy from the repository, and that the changes I made were not massive. All that was done really was removing a couple of divs, adding a little snippet of javascript code, and shuffled the footer.

The additional pages that were added don't need to be in this patch for sure. That should simply things quite a bit. One thing that I am realizing in this process is that a patch should be more singular in nature, as in, if I submit a patch for the homepage, it should just contain the homepage and any related files, not a bunch of extra pages, etc. Thanks for the feedback, all of you.

Thanks Ryan, that's a great improvement.

There are a couple of issues with this submission:

1. the index.patch file appears to undo a number of changes in recent revision to the index.html file; did you update before making changes to the file and work on a file that was checked out from SVN (ie as opposed to an older copy of the file that was not from SVN)?

2. what are we supposed to do with the images.zip file? generally for changes do what you can in the patch and then attach an archive with only the images/etc to add, plus a list of images/etc to remove

-- Not sure why the patch didn't delete them, but this will do it.
8. svn add images/full-wrapper.jpg images/pause.gif images/start.gif images/footer.jpg js/slides.js

That should do it - then this can be committed. Thanks everyone.

[jira] Updated: (OFBIZ-2288) Update the image / content scroller on index.html

Posted by "Ryan Foster (JIRA)" <ji...@apache.org>.

Ryan Foster updated OFBIZ-2288:
-------------------------------

    Attachment: indexScroller.patch

Archive.zip attached with the modified and added images. This is the updated patch file with the minimum contents to make the scroller work as requested. Here is an explanation of what you'll see in this file ('ll follow up with a comment on the full steps to install shortly and hopefully if I've done something incorrectly, you'll let me know):

1. delete css/home.css
-- Not needed

2. Update much of global.css
-- This may seem excessive, but trust me it's needed.
-- This fixed a number of the container issues that were present before.
-- Added in the license header.
-- Brought in necessary stuff from home.css.
-- Added comments
-- Almost ready as a style guide for this look and feel.

3. index.html
-- Updated container structure to allow the footer to anchor to the bottom.
-- Updated the search to remove inline styling and added id for search hint.

4. Added slides.js

5. Removed fieldhints.js, pngFix.js, slideshow.js and global.js
-- They were no longer needed.

I swear, I have the hardest time with patches. I can never seem to get them right. I checked out the repo at ttp://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/ofbiz/site from SVN this morning, so I don't see how I could be out of date. It's probably true this patch is undoing some resent changes, but if it is anything related to layout and file structure, it was probably coded by me in the first place, and it didn't work :), so this should be an improvement. At any rate, I ran an update and created a new patch. As for the images, I made 4 additions, and 4 modifications. Only the following 8 files are in the attached archive.

A images/full-wrapper.jpg
A images/pause.gif
A images/start.gif
A images/footer.jpg
M images/wrapper.jpg
M images/home-wrapper.jpg
M images/header-bg.jpg
M images/slideshow-bg.jpg

[jira] Commented: (OFBIZ-2288) Update the image / content scroller on index.html

Tim Ruppert commented on OFBIZ-2288:
------------------------------------

This needs more work and is not quite usable at this point. Here's the feedback:

1. Pause button - per the original design from Erik Schuessler
2. Randomize the initial load of images / content.
3. Make the move from the end to the beginning more smooth.
4. Provide a patch for this page.
