openoffice.org slowness

Hi -

There have been a couple of reports of slowness on OpenOffice.org over the holidays.

I’ve looked at this for other subdomains than openoffice.org <http://openoffice.org/>. Take a look at the way Infra configures DNS servers and how clients are selecting which server to access. At least in my case my Mac or Airport Express is choosing a random one of two vs. the “closest”. This needs a little more investigation before bringing it to Infra. If you have experienced issues then let me know when, what you are getting when you measure latency, what operating system, and, if you are on your home or corporate network,

I am used traceroute, nslookup and dig (not shown).

Daves-MacBook-Pro:foundation davewave$ traceroute www.openoffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org/>

OK, sorry, I focused on the time thing only.
Indeed if someone can have a look on the system load, just in case. Thanks.

I'm not sure it's the same problem. The problem being discussed here is
not about the site being responsive, but about something like: I open
http://it.openoffice.org and nothing happens for a few minutes (since
the first DNS times out), but then it loads (since it switches to the
second DNS entry) and from then on I can continue browsing at ordinary
speed until I close my browser.

If what you see on the forum is more like every page load being a little
slower than usual, then it must be a different problem. Yes, Infra
recently changed the SQL server. But this shouldn't have an impact on
performance, unless the new server is really too small. If you believe
this could be the case, we can Infra to monitor the system load on the
new server to be sure.

Regards,
   Andrea.

Hi,

For the record, I think that the forums (or at least the English one) are also less responsive. Maybe due to the server change.

Re: openoffice.org slowness

Hi Andrea,

I can confirm this behavior. When I ping openoffice.org, the IP changes
every second try:

$ ping openoffice.org
PING openoffice.org (88.198.26.2) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- openoffice.org ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 9219ms

$ ping openoffice.org
PING openoffice.org (140.211.11.105) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from themis.apache.org (140.211.11.105): icmp_seq=1 ttl=42

64 bytes from themis.apache.org (140.211.11.105): icmp_seq=2 ttl=42
time=178 ms
64 bytes from themis.apache.org (140.211.11.105): icmp_seq=3 ttl=42
time=180 ms
64 bytes from themis.apache.org (140.211.11.105): icmp_seq=4 ttl=42
time=177 ms
^C
--- openoffice.org ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3003ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 177.699/178.769/180.838/1.331 ms

88.198.26.2 is unreachable, 140.211.11.105 works as expected.

Thanks, this will indeed help a lot in troubleshooting and I have
interesting results:

$ wget it.openoffice.org
http://it.openoffice.org/
Resolving it.openoffice.org (it.openoffice.org)... 88.198.26.2,
140.211.11.105, 2a01:4f8:130:2192::2
Connecting to it.openoffice.org (it.openoffice.org)|88.198.26.2|:80...
failed: Connection timed out.
Connecting to it.openoffice.org
(it.openoffice.org)|140.211.11.105|:80... connected.
[ and then the download occurs normally ]

So basically the first choice for me is 88.198.26.2 and that one times out.

For some reason,
$ traceroute www.openoffice.org
always picks up 140.211.11.105 so it works fast.

But if I run
$ traceroute it.openoffice.org
it gets lost somewhere in the Hetzner network in Germany:

$ traceroute it.openoffice.org
traceroute to it.openoffice.org (88.198.26.2), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
  1 [irrelevant local network, omitted] ...

I think this shows that indeed we need someone to check that DNS record.

   Andrea.
