[STATUS] Chair report Nov 2005

New idea to help us keep on top of what's going on. Here's the status as
far as I know it. A partner version for the pmc@ list will be sent to
cover a couple of issues that are currently non-public.

-----

- JCS licensing. I believe these are now resolved.

- Silk. I'm still unable to understand how we get permission to use the
name, and am just posting to the prc@apache mailing list every so often.
Ideas?

- Subversion. Waiting on POI before we're fully in SVN.

- Activity. This is definitely Jakarta's bane, and the ASF as a whole.
Current efforts in this area: archiving inactive Commons Sandbox
components. Creating Silk as a future for Taglibs and other subprojects.

- Slide promotion. Still planning on going TLP?

-----

My personal thoughts:

* Things have improved, but Jakarta is still searching for its identity.

* Javadoc should be easier to find.

* I need to make sure threads find closure more aggressively. (thus this
email)

* We need to use general@ more.

* Need to clean the list of Jakarta committers. (post POI svn) An
aggressively tidy, yet very open door approach should allow us to keep a
firm understanding of who is where and that our PMC oversight is working.

If we use "Apache Silk" instead of just "Silk" then apparently there's
no problem. Or so has been the general advice I've learnt from Roy and
others.

Sanjiva.

Well, there is "Silk (R)", a set of Java classes that support object-
oriented general purpose simulation and animation using the Java
programming language.

See e.g. http://www.informs-sim.org/wsc00papers/037.PDF

I don't like the (R)...

Partly it looks like general confusion over names :) I'd been told to go
check with the PR group on the name, but it seems that the real one is to
hassle Cliff to make sure it's not a legal problem.

Dims directed me to: http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=et2jfo.1.1

Looking there, 'silk web' gives 'SILK WEB SOFTWARE TESTING FROM SEGUE' as
a 'word mark'. I'm not sure if that matters though. ie) how close does it
have to be etc.

Nah, just ideas on how to get things moving. I'll nudge Cliff, and if
there's nothing legally bad, we'll charge in.

The name stuff above. Largely it's been been a casualty of my continued
education in how to make things happen at the ASF.

Why? What's the issue with the name?

Ideas for a new name?

By speaking of Silk, what's the status? I haven't seem any message here
@general (or at the wiki) about the project for weeks...
