It's been almost 4 years since [Scala 2.8 has been released|http://www.scala-lang.org/old/node/7009] and 3 years since [Scala 2.9 has been released|http://www.scala-lang.org/old/node/9483], so there was more than plenty of time to migrate.

Continued support of old Scala 2.8 is causing issues like [this|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KAFKA-1362?focusedCommentId=13970390&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-13970390].
