[jira] [Created] (DIRSERVER-2290) Emergency Recovery when Server will not start

Brian Burch created DIRSERVER-2290:
--------------------------------------

Summary: Emergency Recovery when Server will not start
                 Key: DIRSERVER-2290
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DIRSERVER-2290
             Project: Directory ApacheDS
          Issue Type: Improvement
          Components: doc
    Affects Versions: 2.0.0.AM25
Environment: debian, ubuntu flavours, and possibly other paltforms
            Reporter: Brian Burch

This applies to mainly to the project distribution debian deb installation package, but will be relevant to other installation choices too. The current deb installation script starts apacheds server _before_ the administrator has a chance to manually configure a partition. At startup the server creates all the partitions defined in config.ldif, marks the file as migrated, and never refers to it again.

If the admin has problems populating a new partition, it is possible that the errors will cause the server to crash. This means Studio or ldapmodify will not be able to bind to the directory to correct the error.

This Jira is for the relatively minor task of updating the project wiki to describe how to return the server to a clean configuration, including the new embryo partition, so that it can be started again.
