[jira] Created: (GERONIMO-2552) Remove SVG usage from Admin Console

Remove SVG usage from Admin Console
-----------------------------------

                 Key: GERONIMO-2552
                 URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-2552
             Project: Geronimo
          Issue Type: Bug
      Security Level: public (Regular issues)
          Components: console
    Affects Versions: 1.x
         Environment: Windows
            Reporter: Donald Woods
            Priority: Minor
             Fix For: 1.x

Adobe is ending support for their SVG Viewer for Windows on January 1, 2008 and it is not supported in Windows Vista -
   http://www.adobe.com/svg/pdfs/ASV_EOL_FAQ.pdf
Looking over the following site -
   http://wiki.svg.org/Viewer_Implementations
there doesn't seem to be any free SVG Viewers available for Windows anymore.
Requiring Firefox or Opera browsers should not be an option.

I guess you are talking about SVG in browsers:
Then I just wonder why requiring Internet Explorer was an option (Adobe's SVG Viewer crashed Gecko render engine based browsers since ages), but Firefox is not?

Viewers independent from the browser are available.

Based on the SVG problems with IE6 reported in GERONIMO-1939 and now the problems with IE7 reported in the user list I think this would be a great if we could get this fixed in 1.2. But we're quickly running out of time :-) If you want to attach a patch containing the work you've done so far I would be happy to help investigate the two issues you're seeing.

Version 0.4.0 of Dojo which was recently introduced into trunk has the necessary support and is cross platform. We should consider replacing the custom SVG stuff in the admin console with Dojo.

See http://archive.dojotoolkit.org/nightly/tests/charting/test_engine.html
(this link will probably go stale soon)

FYI, I started playing with dojo.widget.Chart and I was able to create a chart programmatically and update it via DWR call. I think it's reasonably easy to use and very flexible. The following are issues that I'm seeing so far:

1.	I haven't found a way to embed the Dojo chart inside a portlet. It displays the chart but outside the portlet display area.
2.	Continuously updating/rendering of the chart gradually becomes slow. Not sure if the old chart data is being released properly every time you render it.

Paul, I agree. The dojo.widget.Chart would be a good fit....

Uncle Johns Band commented on GERONIMO-2552:
--------------------------------------------

I don't see any recent activity on this item. I tried accessing the Chart demo and am presented with the Message in IE (seems to work fine in FireFox) that the component is unable to load the Adobe SVGN plug-in. You are provided the link to the plug-in to download.

When you get to the Adobe site it is apparent that they will no longer be supporting this as of 1/1/2008.

We need to remove the requirement for the SVG plug-in when using components such as the Chart component so that there is cross-browser support without the need of a 3rd party plug-in.

1/1/2008 will be here very quickly and this issue only has a low priority. I would think that this issue should be elevated to be addressed and corrected sooner rather than later.

No one wants to use components that require a non-supported 3rd party plug-in to work.
