file name called "null"

Hi,

I'm changing the org.apache.log4j.FileAppender class to automatically
generate file names based on managed server names in a weblogic cluster.

can anyone shed some light on why the changed log4j would be generating a
file called null?

at boot time, a file called states-ms1.log is created. when the app is hit,
the rollover happens but 2 files appear in my Windows2000 explorer:

states-ms2.log.2003-01-13-14-14

and

null (0kb)

any ideas?

david
