   RE documentation getting out of date:  I think it's important to link *to* this documentation to help its discoverability and to reduce the chances it won't be noticed if splits are updated.  The javadocs for SplitShardCmd could prominently do this.  
   
   Maybe let us update SplitShardCmd's docs in another PR because we/Salesforce have changes to contribute there.
