Why expat in Apache?

Hello,

Apologies if this is a FAQ! Why does Apache include and build Expat?
Inspecting the Makefiles doesn't reveal that anything core in Apache
actually uses Expat. What does building Apache with --disable-rule=EXPAT
lose you? Thanks in advance--
