URL exhibiting problem: ftp://sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk/pub/packages/simtelnet/

Symptoms:

MS Internet Explorer 3.0 (Final) or Netscape 3.0 are configured to use Apache 1.1.1 as proxy
for FTP and HTTP.

The http requests are correctly processed.

The ftp requests on directories give errors:
'Bad Gateway
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.'

The problem does NOT arise if we use another ftp proxy (TIS ftp-gw or CERN httpd).
