I have good news: it did fix it!
However just compiling the checkout of the fop-trunk was not enough.
I had to use a more recent version of the Xerces framework (Xerces-J-bin.2.9).
(note: just updating the Xerces framework wasn't enough either;It really was the combination of the latest trunk/Xerces framework)
I'm considering to apply the XMLWhiteSpaceHandler/PropertyCache fixes to my local repository version of FOP 0.92 and starting a migration traject for the dozens of xsl-fo 's we have (making them FOP 0.95 compatible).
