.sig or .asc

Hi repository@apache.org,

   Endera Linton <ru...@apache.org> provided 28 .sig's (binary
   PGP sigs) instead of the usual .asc's for repo artifacts ;
   for a list, please see :

     http://people.apache.org/~henkp/repo/

   Should PGP signatures be plain ascii .asc's or are .sig's ok ?
