[build][dependencies] msvcr71.dll problem

Guys,

can I put this dll to my own site and add link to my site to the
dependency list?
This will solve all our problems with this dll...

It should still check the MD5 sum IMHO, so we know what we are picking up.

If you have custom install then only you knows where to get it :)

That would be fine, as long as the error produced when it can't find
msvcr71.dll gives me a hint of where to look to make the change.

Does manual change for depends.properties is acceptable in your case? :)
Or do you want to have externally configurable property?

Hey, I was on a plane... that's why it came after all the discussion
came to the same point that I was trying to make :)

it's not an unreasonable request - hey, ronald - how about a patch? :)

and please, could you make it a settable property in the build.xml
file, rather than an environment variable? It makes it easier for
configuration management...

No, we have repackaged our tooling to eliminate the use of Visual
Editor and essentially have a zip file that we extract to a random
location on our system. We then run a batch file to setup our
environment. We do not perform a standard install.

%WINNT%\System32 is a standard path for any installation.
If you have different versions of MSVC you will have different name for the
library: msvcr71.dll.
Don't you have this lib in %WINNT%\System32 folder with MSVS installed?

Yes, this could work...
I'll implement this tomorrow and will try to implement md5 check...

Agreed.

Alexey if you had used:

    <copy file="${msvcr71.url}" tofile="${msvcr71.dll}" />

instead of:

> + <copy file="${hyenv.SystemRoot}/system32/msvcr71.dll" tofile="${msvcr71.dll}" />

then I think we would be good. Ron could override by specifying
-Dmsvcr71.url=c:\mypath\... to Ant.

(maybe consider changing the property name too since it is not a URL).

Tim

We should also provide an option that will allow the user to specify
where msvcr71.dll can be found. Some environment variable would do the
trick.

I have the MSVC tools available to compile with, but do not have a
standard install of the full IDE etc.. on my machine. This is done so
that I can use different versions of MSVC on the same machine.

So the setup that you just put together would fail on my machine.

Right... Shame on me!

I've implemented this approach in r495243. Now the build copies
msvcr71.dll from system32 directory and fails if there is no needed
library there (this means that the user does not have MSVS2003 which
is requirement).

I thought we already came up with a very reasonable solution that
actually improved the integrity of things :

copy it from the system32 directory when building

What happened to that solution? What you are proposing works, but we
can't redistribute proprietary binaries from apache infrastructure,
and we're going to trip over this at some point. Why not make it
clean from here going forward?

That's OK for me too. Let's just put it somewhere under our control
and resolve this annoying problem.

We already use...
  people.apache.base=http://people.apache.org/~geirm/harmony/

why not put it there?

I think it depends on the licence...and I guess we could not do that
otherwise there would be not so much discussion here. ;-)
