   @BewareMyPower thanks for digging into this, and sorry it never got a proper review. #24741 resolved #24697, the issue that motivated this PR. The entry cache read path has also been reworked quite a bit since, so this refactoring would need a fresh start against current master. We're going through the backlog of open PRs (https://lists.apache.org/thread/cgy7w0qgnq8s7j0ykyzgrn3hj4nb67wf), so I'm closing this one. If you still want to pursue the cleanup, a new PR on top of master would be the way to go.
