The cassandra/bin directory consists of only executable shell scripts, except for 2000+ lines of Python code in cqlsh.py.  This code would be reuseable if refactored to cassandra/pylib.  

We may wish to retain a minimal runner cqlsh.py or simply use the cqlsh shell script.
