OK, I tried reproducing this bug with TestSolrJPerf.java (attached) talking to a stock example solr server on trunk - it ran for over 500M docs without issue.  I stopped it because I need my laptop performance back :-)

Perhaps next I'll try something that uses multiple threads to add to the client, along with more random pauses on the client side to further exercise the connection establish/release code.
