[jira] Created: (GERONIMODEVTOOLS-141) Installation/Activation of Plugin fails

Installation/Activation of Plugin fails
---------------------------------------

                 Key: GERONIMODEVTOOLS-141
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-141
             Project: Geronimo-Devtools
          Issue Type: Bug
          Components: eclipse-plugin
    Affects Versions: 1.2.0
         Environment: Windows XP SP2, Java 1.6.0_01, Eclipse 3.3 M6, WST 2.0 M6
            Reporter: Stefan
            Priority: Blocker

Via Eclipse function to download additional server adapters you can choose and install the plugin.
But after restart Eclipse the plugin is disabled. If you try to enable it, you get:

Requested operation cannot be performed because it would invalidate the current configuration. See details for more information. org.apache.geronimo.feature (1.2.0) requires plug-in "com.ibm.etools.emf.event".

I don't know about the process of publishing the plugin to the official Eclipse plugin repository. Would you mind upgrading your unstable plugin to the latest one - http://people.apache.org/dist/geronimo/eclipse/unstable/g-eclipse-plugin-2.0.0-v20070703.1201-deployable.zip and giving it a shot? I've just copied it over.

Good to hear you're having lots of fun! ;-)

[jira] Updated: (GERONIMODEVTOOLS-141) Installation/Activation of other Plugins fail after installing Devtools plugin

     [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-141?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel ]

Ted Kirby updated GERONIMODEVTOOLS-141:
---------------------------------------

    Attachment: GD-141-2.patch

Here is a second patch that includes the jst upgrade from 1.6.0 to 2.0.0.

In addition, I

1. Added a site.xml file that the build will put in the updatesite.zip file.
2. Updated the names/id of the geronimo installable runtimes from 1.2 to 2.0
3. Removed v.12 feature from the build.

With these changes, the updatesite.zip file need only be unzipped to a directory and used by eclipse as a local update site. The same file may be used when it comes time for the update site on the web.

<requires>
        <import feature="org.eclipse.jst" version="2.0.0" match="compatible"/>
</requires>

not

<requires>
        <import feature="org.eclipse.jst" version="1.6.0" match="compatible"/>
</requires>

I have made these changes in all the Geronimo feature.xml files and I can now update from update sites once again!!:-)

I did what you have described in 1. and 2. Additionally I had to modify the feature.xml for some other packages:

features/org.apache.geronimo.feature_2.0.0
features/org.apache.geronimo.v11.feature_2.0.0
features/org.apache.geronimo.v20.feature_2.0.0

As before, the everything works nicely, also the update/install functionality is working now.

In case it is important: We are still working with geronimo 1.1.1 here.

It would definitly be nice if that issue could be fixed. I have installed all the latest versions of the eclipse-europe version; but every install/update try gets blocked with "Geronimo v1.0 Server Adapter (2.0.0) requires feature "org.eclipse.jst (1.6.0)", or compatible." I also don't understand why the upgrade should fix this issue when the issue didn't get fixed.
Apart of that issue the plugin works very nice here!

I had also run into the issue of not being able to install the Spring IDE plugin because of Geronimo dependencies. I'm glad you found a solution to it, but am wondering whether it doesn't cause any troubles for earlier releases of Eclipse as they don't use WTP 2.0.0 and so no org.eclipse.jst at 2.0.0 level is available for them. I think Sachin should take a look at it soon or...I'm going to change feature.xml's to use 2.0.0 and possibly break earlier Eclipse versions.

I'm using the latest Geronimo plugin release with Eclipse IDE 3.3 just fine - download one from http://people.apache.org/dist/geronimo/eclipse/unstable/ (building now the very latest version). It seems that the official distribution of the plugin isn't updated and is slightly error-prone. Could you verify that the unstable version works before we push the latest binaries to the official repos? (I don't know what's needed so don't ask me...very politely...why I haven't done that yet ;-))

Jacek,
You are correct that if you change the feature.xml to use 2.0.0 this will break if you try and run this on any Eclipse that does not run Web Tools 2.
I'm no Eclipse expert but if the new Geronimo 2.0 plug in really does rely on WTP 2.0 there will need to be 2 versions one for WTP 1.5 and one for WTP 2.0. If the Geronimo 2.0 plugin can happly live and work under WTP 1.5 you could change the featur.xml to
<import feature="org.eclipse.jst" version="1.5.0" match="greaterOrEqual"/>
How does that sound?

The eclipse plugin that is currently on the update site is for WTP 1.5.4 only. There are issues with it installing it on Eclipse 3.3/WTP2.0. Since these are released binaries they cannot be cracked open and modified to prevent installation on Eclipse 3.3.

As far as the unstable driver that is supported on WTP2.0. It will be published on the update site, once Geronimo 2.0 is released (in order to break snapshot depenencies) and secondly, once the plugin has gone through the voting process. You can expect RC drivers to roll out once Geronimo 2.0 is released. In the meantime please continue to use the daily drivers and go through the manual (non update mgr) installation process.
