[jira] Created: (SHINDIG-1314) Support com.google.gadgets.analytics feature

Support com.google.gadgets.analytics feature
--------------------------------------------

                 Key: SHINDIG-1314
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SHINDIG-1314
             Project: Shindig
          Issue Type: New Feature
          Components: Javascript
            Reporter: Mat Mannion
            Priority: Minor
         Attachments: shindig-1314.patch

Some gadgets, notably the official BBC news gadget at http://bbcnewsgadget.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/Gadget/bbc_igoogle_ukedition12.xml require the "com.google.gadgets.analytics" feature to work. Shindig already works around the legacy "analytics" feature by including scripts from Google, so it seems reasonable to also add support for this feature, which uses the Google Analytics JS instead of Urchin.

Working back from [Google's documentation on the feature|http://code.google.com/apis/analytics/docs/tracking/gadgetTracking.html#trackingYourGadget] it seems to be an extremely basic wrapper for common methods from Analytics' ga.js

In the general case, I agree with you, naturally :) I'm not sure our users would agree, though. They want it all to "just work".

IMHO (don't you love it when people start off like that!) this type of change is decreasing the value of the OpenSocial spec. "com.google.gadgets.analytics" is not a core or even optional part of the spec, nor should it be. I'd rather see shindig stick to being a reference implementation of the spec, with mechanisms for consumers to introduce custom/proprietary features.

BBC (and many others) should change their gadget to make the analytics feature optional instead of required.

This should probably move to extras then. Keep only the spec items and shindig implementation specific pieces in core yet allow for simple functionality like this to remain in place.
