I have update the version of the Surefire to the most current 2.16 with  http://svn.apache.org/r1560291, but I am still unable to reproduce the reported issue in my environment (java version "1.7.0_45" on Mac 10.9)

Can you please provide more details about your OS, Java version and also the configured MAVEN_OPTS. If the JVM crashes during running the tests you should also see a crash log in the working directory.
