mod_jk with multiple instances

Is anyone using multiple instance of Tomcat and Apache using mod_jk as the
connector.  If so, how do you get it to write to conf/auto and look for
conf/jk/workers.properties files in $CATALINA_BASE istead of
$CATALINA_HOME??
