why are you calling shade:shade explicitely?
this goal is bound to package phase, as explained in the doc http://maven.apache.org/plugins/maven-shade-plugin/
if the intent is to check if the shading works, without installing the artifact, you're supposed to do "mvn package"

Adding a new mojo that uses {{@execute phase="package"}} to fork the build might be a solution.
Until then, I made the goal output a nice error message in [r644068|http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?view=rev&revision=644068] instead of crashing with the NPE.
