Using Tcl 8.6 with Rivet

Hello everyone,

This is my first message to the list, so please forgive me if there is an answer
somewhere else, but I didn't find it.

I'm just trying Rivet 2.0.5 on a Debian machine, using the official
packages, and
I've both Tcl 8.5 and 8.6 installed on it, the former from the sid
repos, and the
latter from the experimental.

I'd like to use Rivet with Tcl8.6, but if I try <? puts $tcl_version"
?>, I get 8.5
as result. ldd on librivet.so gives libtcl8.5.so.0 as requisite, so I
wonder if there
is a way to choose between 8.6 and 8.5 at runtime, or I need to recompile Rivet.

Thank you very much,

Marco Pallante

Ok, I'll try 2.1.

I've never used Rivet before, so I don't know if I'm a good candidate
for testing,
but I'll try to give you some help.

Bye,

Marco

Yes, I know you're doing a very good job for the TCT

O.k.

The issue I had was with Itcl4.0b6 and the rivet form package.
"info exists" did not work for object variables:
This was fixed here in march:
http://core.tcl.tk/itcl/info/86458f4463
and is ok the bundeld version Itcl4.0b8 in the current tcl8.6b3
distribution. I had found a second bug (methods with spaces), which is
also fixed.

Thank you,
Harald

I don't have many details I can recall. Sometime (in 2011?) child
processes started to segfault when Rivet was build for Tcl 8.6.
I didn't investigate and it was apparently fixed in one of the
subsequent beta releases.

I remember I mentioned the problem on the list and you confirmed some
important issue had been fixed with Tcl 8.6. I don't think is matter
for concern now.

Could you explain in more detail where the issue was and with which version?
Was it the current 8.6b3 ?
I am personally using this and had no issues so far.

Thank you,
Harald

I tested myself Rivet with the Tcl8.6 package from experimental and it
worked except for a short time when a bug in Tcl caused child processes
to fail.

If you feel you want to be part of the process of testing Rivet 2.1 then
you may download the second release candidate

http://people.apache.org/~mxmanghi/rivet-2.1.0rc1.tar.gz

and give us some feedback. If you feel you want step up your involvement
you may test also the 2.0.6 bugfix release

http://people.apache.org/~mxmanghi/rivet-2.0.6rc1.tar.gz

ciao

Italiano anche tu? :-)

Harald, Massimo, thank you very much for your answers. That's
exactly what I need. So, I'll try to recompile Rivet, then.

Massimo, I'm already using the Tcl 8.6 packages from experimental,
and not a custom installation.

Bye,

Marco

As both Debian maintainer and developer for Rivet my involvement in the
issue is twofold.

short answer: no, you can't choose it runtime. You have to build Rivet
yourself and tell configure where is the tclConfig.sh for the version of
Tcl you want to build mod_rivet with

In the Debian case (testing and unstable) building Rivet 2.0.5 for
Apache 2.2

./configure --with-apache=/usr --with-tcl=/usr/lib/tcl8.5
--with-apxs=/usr/bin/apxs2 --with-apache-version=2

You have you're custom Tcl installation just tell configure where you
have installed it.

Notice that Debian ships Tcl 8.6 in experimental (along with Apache 2.4
but I would be careful about this because some fundamental packages such
as mod_perl don't run with it)

Re: Using Tcl 8.6 with Rivet

Dear Marco,
this is the first quick message. Massimo may answer with more knowledge.

When compiling rivet, the tcl version (e.g. the libtcl.8.5.so) is fixed
by the linker.
Ways to switch:
- ln -s /usr/lib(64)/libtcl.8.6.so /usr/lib(64)/libtcl.8.5.so
-> does not work for you, as you have both installed
- recompile rivet with the tcl8.6 tcl folder which contains
"tclConfig.sh" which gives the library name.

In my case, this was (on CentOS 64):
./configure --with-tcl=/usr/local/lib64 --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs
--with-tclsh=/usr/local/bin/tclsh8.6 --with-apache-version=2
--with-rivet-target-dir=/usr/local/lib64/rivet --enable-version-display
make
make install
Additional hints on:
wiki.tcl.tk/rivet

Hope this helps,
Harald
