An HBase release that ships with 0.20.205?

Hey devs,

Now that 0.20.205 was finally released, I think we must hurry to get an
HBase release that includes it. Should that be a special 0.90? Or 0.90
recompiled with 0.20.205 that we call 0.91.205 or whatever? Or should we
just continue focusing on 0.92 and ship with it?

My concerns are:

 - Current situation where we ship with 0.20-append is just mad, it's not
even released. Need to fix this ASAP. I wonder how many potential users
started installing HBase and just said "f**k this s**t" seeing that.
 - Compatibility with 0.20-append and plain 0.20.2, like if we move to
0.20.205 in 0.90 will it break everyone?
 - Stability... I haven't tested it so I don't know what to expect. Can't be
too bad tho.

Thoughts and 0.02c welcome,

J-D

At Hortonworks, we have tested Hadoop 0.20.205.0 with HBase 0.90.4 with patch:

HBASE-4415, HBASE-4498, HBASE-4523, HBASE-4535

At the same time, the same patches also work for HBase 0.92 and Hadoop
0.20.205.0
combination for both secure and unsecured installation.

Eric

I think it makes sense to have 0.92 as the release for 0.20.205. There is no
real advantage in having an interim release with not many added features
just because there is a new Hadoop release out there that we think works
better. Also, it'll give time to test out stability of 0.20.205.

Just my $0.02...

We've been testing security features proposed for 0.92 with 0.20.205 with a patch to 205 to make testing easier (not needed for users). 0.92 is a good candidate to be "the release" for 0.20.205.

Shall we wait for MAPREDUCE-3206 to be resolved ?

Meanwhile, let's work on 0.92

The approach we are taking in Bigtop for releasing a Hadoop stack based on
0.20.205 is to recompile with -Dhadoop.version=0.20.205.0. If you're interested
in helping us test that, please drop by the bigtop-dev mailing list. We'll start
publishing RPM/DEBs for testing very soon and the announcement will be made
over there.

Thanks,
Roman.
