What is Concept for user authentication with LDAP

Can someone explain briefly tell me

1. What calls the bind method in LDAPUserManager?
2.How do I specify LDAP instead of Peer for authentication?
3. Should I comment out the entiries for the DB in 
TurbineResources.properties?

4.  What is the status of LDAP?
