I saw no exception in the log, and the log4j configuration is the original one (I've just changed the log level to Debug)

Can you provide the log configuratio you are using ?
Also did you get any other error on the console ? A StackTrace ?

Good news, it seems there is no issue with the application, the problem was with the wrapper which timeout at startup because the application is slower with the DEBUG option on.
I've added the following properties in the wrapper.conf to fix the issue : wrapper.startup.timeout=0 (default is 30)
I guess it would be a good idea to add this property in the wrapper.conf with a better default value and/or a comment in the log4j file to indicate that the wrapper value must be changed.
Sorry I didn't catch it before but at least I know how to build the application now... BTW, when I compile with the test on, it fails on the annotation project.

Ah, sadly, you should first compile the Shared project... The best is to get all the sources from :
svn co http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/directory/trunks apacheds-trunk
and to rebuild everything (use mvn clean install -DskipTests to go faster)

I don't see anything obvious, except that there may be something wrong in the addusing/addUsedBy methods in Registries (those methods are only called in debug mode).
I have added a try/catch around the code, to print a stack trace if we have any kind of exception thrown.
Can you check with the latest trunk to see if you get some stackTrace that could help me to know where the error comes from ?
