Tomcat No Works. Apache Doesn't. Any Ideas?

Rick, your memory is perfect. Using shell=command.com /e:512 /p in the
Config.sys file solved the memory for environment variables problem. It
worked just like you said it would, and now I've got Tomcat both starting
and stopping correctly.

Unfortunately, I don't have Apache working. I still get it just flashing
for a moment on the screen, and I still can't access my test page.

I notice the following lines in my tomcat.conf file:

############################## Context mapping - all requests go to tomcat

ApJServMount /examples /root

############################## Context mapping - you need to "deploy"
# ( copy or ln -s ) the context into htdocs
##

# ApJservMount /CONTEXT/servlet /root
# <Location /CONTEXT/WEB-INF/ >
# AllowOverride None
# deny from all
# </Location>

Do I need to do something with these to get it to access the folder that
Apache is supposed to be looking at? Or is there something else I need to
do in order
for it to reference the C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\htdocs folder?

Please give me any thoughts any of you might have on this. Apache did work
before I added Tomcat into the mix.

Thank you all for your help. I couldn't have done it without you.

Val

Val,

You only want Include TOMCAT_HOME/conf/tomcat-apache.conf in your
httpd.conf file. You do *not* want tomcat.conf included. Maybe that's
the whole problem?

You may get an error about environment space when you run it on Win98.
In that case you have to change the memory reserved from auto to 4096 or
whatever the max is. At least that's what worked for a friend.

   Ken.

Actually, I said that backwards. "Include TOMCAT_HOME/conf/tomcat.conf"
should not be in httpd.conf, only "Include
TOMCAT_HOME/conf/tomcat-apache.conf" should.

Oh well, like Nixon said: I know you believe you understand what you think I
said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Perhaps I am wrong, but in my experience "Include
TOMCAT_HOME/conf/tomcat-apache.conf" should not be in httpd.conf, only
"Include TOMCAT_HOME/conf/tomcat.conf"

Am I wrong?

You are all wonderful, amazing, and fantastic. I'm thrilled to say that
Tomcat and Apache now both work.

You're right, Ross. You need the full path when you're using Windows.

Thanks everyone.

RE: Tomcat Now Works. Apache Doesn't. Any Ideas?

Posted by ross Inglish <ga...@augustanet.de>.
I found from experience with Apache/JServ on NT 4 that I had to reference
the entire path in the include statement:

include "c:\programme\jakarta-tomcat\conf\tomcat-apache.conf"

I had to move the directory structure out of "c:\programme\Apache
Group\jakarta-tomcat\conf\tomcat-apache.conf" because Apache doesn't appear
to parse the embedded (space) in Apache Group.

Hope this works for you...

Ross

Incidentally, you did comment out (by placing a # at the beginning):

     LoadModule jserv_module libexec/mod_jserv.so

and uncomment (by deleting the initial #):

     LoadModule jserv_module modules/ApacheModuleJServ.dll

near the top of TOMCAT_HOME/conf/tomcat.conf, right? If not, you must do so
because the .so id only for "Unix" and the .dll is for MSWin.

Here is the top few lines of the tomcat.conf on my NT box:

############################################################################
###
# Apache JServ Configuration File
#
############################################################################
###

# Note: this file should be appended or included into your httpd.conf

# Tell Apache on win32 to load the Apache JServ communication module
LoadModule jserv_module modules/ApacheModuleJServ.dll

# Tell Apache on Unix to load the Apache JServ communication module
# For shared object builds only!!!
# @LOAD_OR_NOT@LoadModule jserv_module @LIBEXECDIR@/mod_jserv.so
# LoadModule jserv_module libexec/mod_jserv.so

When I remove the lines:

    Include TOMCAT_HOME/conf/tomcat-apache.conf
    Include TOMCAT_HOME/conf/tomcat.conf

Apache will start.

I can only assume that there is something in there that
Apache does not like. Attached is a copy of my tomcat.conf &
tomcat-apache.conf files. Any
thoughts on what the problem might be? There must be something I've missed
in trying to set them up to work together.

I'm running it on Windows 98. It runs as a console application, and won't
run in MS DOS mode. It opens a DOS Window that remains open for the
duration of the execution.

Trying to start it from the command prompt in a
console window only opens the folder the executable sits in, at which point
you click on the icon to start it. I don't get the benefit of seeing any
error messages. The DOS Window just flickers and then disappears. The
only time I get an error message is if I actually boot into DOS and try to
start it. Then it tells me I can't run this application in DOS mode.

Thanks.

Val

Rick, take a good look at the webapps/examples directory structure. It
gives you some idea on what is served from where.
Tomcat serves pages from webapps/myapp. servlets and beans should be
under webapps/myapp/web-inf/classes (unless they can be found in a jar,
in which casse the jar goes into webapps/myapp/web-inf/lib.
In your case the images go into webapps/myapp/images.

We've almost reached the limit of my usefulness now.
Thus far I have only used tomcat with JSP pages.
I too am having diffaculty understanding how the directory structure should be.

Currently, I have all my jsp files in the webapps/ROOT directory and tomcat
finds them there.
However; I have just created a webapps/ROOT/images directory for gif files and
Apache does not find them.
I need to get smarter on where Apache and Tomcat look for files.
