SOAP with Attachments

I can send attachments to an Axis service using SAAJ and I can process
these attachments myself. I was wondering if Axis manages attachments
itself? It creates an attachments directory and the engine has a
property that references this directory, as does the WSDD. I can't see
any code in Axis that looks like it handles attachments automatically
but I wondered if I missed something?
