Daniel,
Apparently connections are not being returned to pool thus causing high resource
contention, which pretty much explains the poor performance.

(1) Are you seeing any exceptions in the log? If yes, please attach stack traces
to this report

(2) Please produce a simple test app that can be used to reproduce the problem
along with the Tomcat's server.xml file, and I'll take it from there
