[csv] release 1.0?

Hi All,

It seems we have been stuck for a while and that we are all busy.

Should we pull the trigger and try to release 1.0?

Or, is anyone willing to step up and do work on the 1 or 2 remaining corner
issues?

Gary

My personal preference is for CSV*, that seems to be the most common
syntax for 3-letters acronyms.

Practically, it's also easier to type "SHIFT down + C + S + V" than
"SHIFT down + C + SHIFT up + s + v".

Would you like to use my IBMXMLSAXParser? ;-)

I agree with naming the classes something usable in an IDE(Ide). It also
tends to make things more readable. Consider CSVToXML vs CsvToXml etc. It's
not obvious at a glance what the former says.

I agree, this really needs sorting before a release.
Although it only affects the behaviour of CSV (not the API), it is
such a fundamental part of CSV parsing that it really needs to work in
the first release.

Hi everybody,

I'm a long time user of csv and am eagerly awaiting the 1.0 release.
Two major "bugs" are unresolved:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CSV-35 Escaped line separators
are not supported

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CSV-58 Unescape handling needs rethinking

IMHO the first one may be addressed after version 1.0. I feel like any
workaround for this issue will still work for any changes that might
be made in reaction to it.

The second one should in my opinion be resolved before 1.0. I feel
like users will be relying strongly on how escaping is handled. I'm
not quite sure about the status of the issue, but any escape chars
appearing or disappearing in 1.1 would be quite questionable for a
component as fundamental as csv parsing and writing. I for one
repeatedly chose apache commons-csv not only for the simple API, but
for the name as well, which in my head stands for: "don't worry about
it. we got this figured out."

My personal preference would be Csv* instead of CSV* as well. I am
using json-lib as well as gson and I prefer gson's Json* naming over
json-libs JSON* naming because it auto-completes a lot faster (JA
instead of JSONA for JsonArray/JSONArray if the IDE uses camel-case
auto-complete).

Kind Regards

Hello,

I think it is fine to not support record seperators other than EOL. So
as long as it supports (*) CR/LF/CRLF, NEL (U+0085 - mapped from EBCDIC)
and LS (U+2028) it is ok to not require further configuration.

One thing which is however quite common is multi-line field values
(inside quotes).

It looks like the two issues revolve around the question if record
separators should always be some combination of CR and LF or if they
may be more exotic. I think that if someone made the call that
commons-csv will not support exotic record separators, both issues
could be closed very quickly. I'd support that call since I don't see
any use cases for exotic record separators. After all, CSV is a
specified format and while some tolerance is required to cover what
has become a family of formats, I think that exotic record separators
don't play a role here.

+1 to releasing trunk.

We had a similar discussion about this a couple of months ago. The
fact is that people are using commons-csv now, either by making their
own build or by pulling the commons-csv codebase directly into their
own codebase, and this will lead to the same jar hell issues when a
"real" first release comes out. I think that delaying the release
further, particularly for a couple of tickets that have been open for
over two years, will only make this problem worse.

Alpha, beta, or GA makes no difference if it's made public through maven
central. As soon as something is available there, people will start to use
it. This will lead to jar hell, when we decide/have to break BC between
alpha/beta and GA.

That said I'd just release trunk as 1.0, since nobody among us seems to
have the ability/time to fix the last outstanding issue.

Since there are still discussions over API and/or fundamental

Re: [csv] release 1.0?

Posted by Gary Gregory <ga...@gmail.com>.
Since we not seem to be able to release 1.0 with a clean implementation
ATM...

I would like to propose to release a 1.0-beta1 to put a working
implementation in Maven repos.

This will avoid some of use depending on SNAPSHOT builds.

Thoughts?

Gary

I'm definitely in favor of going for a 1.0 release. I think that the
delay in releasing it introduces more potential problems than the two
open Jira issues that are blocking the release ever will.

The public API is OK, and the internal stuff seems OK.

But it feels like we've reviewed this so many times and we seem stuck.

There are one or two Jiras that are open and tricky, about escaping,
Unicode, and maybe something else...
