svn log is very slow

I created a SVN repository by importing a big bunch of sources which
were before under VSS. I wanted to create the repository in revision 1
(by making the import in one transaction). Everything is fine but svn
log becomes very slow when
he has to fetch revision 1, even when I use (svn log --quiet). It's the
same problem with Subclipse, Tortoise or command line on Linux (where
our repository was created).

Is there any solution or workaround ?

Thanks
