Passing values from JavaScript to Java

Pardon me if this has been answered already. I'm not a JavaScript expert
and am struggling to understand how to call a JavaScript from within a
component, have it compute a value, and return the value back to the
component. For example, I would like to call a JavaScript and have it
return a the navigator.userAgent string.

I've look at the examples in the Tapestry In Action book and at the
contrib Palette component (which executes a JavaScript and retrieves a
value) and I see how the <set> and <let> statements are creating new
symbols in the input Map, but I don't see how to add or modify and entry
in the Map from within the JavaScript.

Can this be done?

Thanks,
Rob
