init() and Panes

Hey folks,

I've got a couple quick, dumb questions.

How often is the init() method called for classes that implement the 
Portlet interface? What calls it (I'm guessing PortletController)? Is 
there a way to force init() to be called more often?

Also ... is there any documentation as to how Panes work? Do they have 
their own PortletControllers or just their own PortletSets? Is there a 
Pane object (I haven't been able to find one)?
