Redesign the authentication process to:
 * Decouple authentication from the handshake
 * Provide better integration with standard HTTP authentication mechanisms.
 * Simplify the handshake process:
 ** Make this single-stage rather than potentially multi-stage.
 ** Remove auth payloads.
