sling for apachecon site

One more random thought:

The ApacheCon website is current written in Ruby on Rails. Well,
actually it uses extensions to Radiant, an RoR CMS. I through it
together last summer when I became fed-up maintaining the previous pile
of code that I had been handed.

However, the current site has plenty of bugs and needs refactoring and
fixing. I like Rails but there aren't a lot of Radiant/Rails people
here at the ASF, so I've often been tempted to port the code to one of
the ASF frameworks.

Lately I've been particularly tempted to moving it to either CouchDB
(with maybe some Rails on the front end) or Sling. But honestly, I
don't know where to start with Sling.

Anyway, I'll be at ApacheCon Europe is anyone wants to find me and chat
about this idea. I'm not promising I'll do the site in Sling, but I'd
like to at least get an idea of how that would be done.

Well, it's just an idea right now and I don't expect us to actually
switch over from the Rails site anytime soon. But I'm happy to talk to
anyone about it at ApacheCon.

Good point. I just registered for a BOF on the Wiki [1], so go ahead and
show your interest by increasing the counter ;-)

Afaik there wasn't enogh people for session on tuesday, but I'm pretty sure
there will be a BOF session during the regular conference.
Since this is the first time I attend the ApacheCon I don't know at all how
this is organized.

Is the informal get-together happening? I seem to recall that there
wasn't enough people signing up for it.

hi aaron,

that's great. thanks for considering sling.

i am trying to make it out to apache con europe, but i am not sure
that i definitely will make it. i would be more than happy to talk about
how sling can be an extremely valuable platform for a web cms
set of requirements.

Hi Aaron,

What shall I say ? Great Idea ! Ok, I have to say that. But I am
convinced, I am right ;-)

I will be in Amsterdam from Wednesday till Friday and I am sure we will
be able to find a slot to talk. I know, that Bertrand Delacretaz,
Carsten Ziegeler, and Jukka Zitting will also be there.

So, looking forward to see you in Amsterdam.

Regards
Felix

I've spoken with Thorsten before, but not about the ApacheCon site.
Unfortuntely, ApacheCon was really busy for me, so I didn't get a chance
this time.

With every respect for Lenya, I'm also leaning towards Sling more. But
in the time being, we're committed to the Rails based site. I simply
don't have the cycles to rewrite it. Though I'd be happy to help a
community that wanted a crack at it.

Ah, I see. I just thought there might be technical or functional
reasons. We have a lot of trouble getting a decent market share for
Lenya (even in the ASF), I guess the lack of info on the website is a
major reason for this. We're maintaining the Lenya website with Lenya on
the Zones server and are quite happy with the situation.

Sure – at least two committers will be there (Thorsten Scherler and
Rudolf Korhummel), if you're interested I'll be happy to send you their
contact infos.

> Or I could bring up the topic on the lenya lists.

That would of course be very much appreciated.

Just a little introduction from a functional POV: Lenya is great for
setting up simple or complex sites, serving static data and/or dynamic
content. Since you can leverage Cocoon's pipelines, it's very easy to
create complex pages from various XML sources. You get most standard
collaborative editing functions out of the box (review/publishing
workflows, content validation, WYSIWYG editing, version history etc.).

But with Lenya it's rather difficult to allow the website visitor to
generate content. If the focus is on user-generated content, Sling is
certainly the better option.

Back when I rewrote the website, I looked at lenya a bit but I didn't
know it well enough to do the site in the time I had. I'm happy to look
at lenya again, especially if someone will be around at ApacheCon to
answer some questions.

Or I could bring up the topic on the lenya lists.

Slightly OT: Is there a particular reason why Lenya is not considered?
