0.5 release

It's been a while since we've had a release, so I'd like to kick one off
soon. I'm going to post an RC later today just to make sure the release
mechanics are all still intact. If there are no outstanding development
items that people really want to see in 0.5 then we can consider that an
alpha, otherwise please speak up if there is anything you think should be a
0.5 blocker.
