[Issue 126782] Referencing external cells

--- Comment #7 from David Parker <D....@Leeds.ac.uk> ---
My first attempt to import referenced squares from another spreadsheet was done
by inserting = in the target cell, then selecting the source cell which
produced a formula in the target cell which I conformed by clicking on the
green tick. The value from the source cell was imported successfully. It was
then possible to import the rest of the values for the entire column by
dragging the frame on the target cell to cover all the cells in that column.

These remained stable until I closed the spreadsheet and on re-opening it all
the target cells contained the letters 'REF'

After that I learned that to ensure automatic updating required DDE but
although this appeared to work the values similarly disappeared on closing the
file to be replaced with N/A.

In both cases I think I have systematically followed the instructions given in
the Help section under various headings.

I am saving the spreadsheets in excel format.

--- Comment #3 from David Parker <D....@Leeds.ac.uk> ---
What I am trying to do is reference a column of figures to a column in another
spreadsheet which is updated every month.

I think my problem may be related to issue 126759. At least looking at that has
now pointed me in the direction of using DDE if I wanted to ensure automatic
updating from the source spreadsheet when that itslef is updated. I understand
that this created by first copying and pasting the figures from the source
spreadsheet and then using paste special and ticking the link box.

I followed these instructions to achieve automatic updating

"Automatically updates the contents of the link when you open the file. Any
changes made in the source file are then displayed in the file containing the
link. Linked graphic files can only be updated manually. This option is not
available for a linked graphic file.
The Automatic option is only available for DDE links. You can insert a DDE link
by copying the contents from one file and pasting by choosing Edit - Paste
Special, and then selecting the Link box. As DDE is a text-based linking
system, only the displayed decimals are copied into the target sheet."

This appeared to allow me to select the automatic option in Edit Link.

But on clsing and reopening the file all I have in the cells is N/A. Before I
did all this I as getting REF in all the affected cells. The link is clearly
not retained when the file is closed.

The defect and its description is not clear to me.

Could you provide instructions step-by-step and a sample document?
Thanks in advance.

You specified 4.1.1 in the Version. Is that accurate? Or have you updated to
4.1.2?

Please provide more specific information about this.

One way would be to describe how to create an OpenOffice Calc file (or files)
that has referenced cells and that on reopening the sheet, the references have
to be remade.

If you mean referenced cells in a different spreadsheet file, do you receive
any notices when you open the referencing document again? Or are these
referenced cells in another sheet of the same file? Is Issue 127659 related to
what happens for you?

Also, what format are you saving the OpenOffice Calc file in? .ods or
something else?

OK, then any relationship to Issue 126759 may be coincidental.

Please provide the additional level of detail requested in Comment 1.
