Forgot to mention that HBase has to be configured with the BulkDeleteEndpoint enabled via

  <property>
    <name>hbase.coprocessor.region.classes</name>
    <value>org.apache.hadoop.hbase.coprocessor.example.BulkDeleteEndpoint</value>
  </property>
