REPOST: Oracle 9i thin-driver LOB-support broken in OJB1.0

This issue seems to have gotten lost in the noise during 1.0RC5 / 1.0 
release plans and intensive patching during the holidays...

I'm still a bit puzzled by the code that was checked in for Oracle9i in 
the first place, so I would appreciate some feedback before filing a 
Scarab defect report.
