Have you installed an extension for grammar check? It's not included by default.

In the search field, enter grammar and you'll have some matches.
The one often cited is LanguageTool: http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/languagetool
But there may be others.

Try whichever you like.  If it doesn't suit, uninstall it and try another.  I learned more grammar at school than the various English grammar checkers know.
